Addressing veteran homelessness, unemployment

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 20, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) supported a package of bills this week that would help veterans find homes, secure jobs and access VA services.

The House passed a series of bills late Monday addressing critical veterans’ needs as the country prepares to honor our fallen heroes on Memorial Day.

“Many veterans are facing homelessness and unemployment, and we owe it to every man and woman in uniform to ensure that they have access to housing and a good job once their service ends. We have made a sacred promise to our veterans, and the House is working to see that our veterans receive the care and appreciation they have earned. These bills will help address critical problems in the veteran community and guarantee better futures for those who have given so much for our country,” Rep. Jenkins said.

The bills include:

H.R. 1382, the Boosting Rates of American Veteran Employment Act, which would allow the U.S. Veterans Affairs Department to give preference to companies with high numbers of veteran employees when awarding VA contracts.
H.R. 91, Veteran’s I.D. Card Act, which would allow all veterans to obtain an identification card from the VA.
H.R. 474, the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Programs Reauthorization Act, which would reauthorize the Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program.
H.R. 1816, Vulnerable Veterans Housing Reform Act of 2015, which would reduce veteran homelessness by exempting veterans’ aid and attendance benefits from income consideration by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department.
H.R. 1313, the Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business Relief Act, which would help service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses transition from this status after the death of the veteran small business owner.
