Funding Will Benefit Homeless Individuals in Greenbrier, Ohio Counties

WASHINGTON, D.C. – May 9, 2013 – (RealEstateRama) — Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin today announced more than $181,780 in federal funding for local housing agencies to help homeless individuals and families access permanent and transitional housing, and other essential services.

“Homelessness is tragic, and it affects far too many people who fall on difficult circumstances unexpectedly,” said Rockefeller. “This funding not only helps give homeless West Virginians a path to permanent housing, it also provides assistance that can lead to long-term independence so these individuals can get back on their feet.”

“In West Virginia, we are known for neighbors helping neighbors,” said Manchin. “These important programs include housing, job training, health care, substance abuse treatment and childcare, serving as a support system for those who are in need. These services offer hope and assistance as some of West Virginia’s most vulnerable residents overcome challenging circumstances and get back on their feet.”

Below are the individual award amounts:

• $155,252—Greenbrier County Housing Authority—Lewisburg, WV
• $26,536—Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless—Wheeling, WV

The funding comes from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Continuum of Care grants program, which offers three different competitively-awarded grant programs that help address homelessness including: Supportive Housing, Shelter Plus Care, and Single Room Occupancy programs. Together, these programs allow local housing agencies to offer permanent and transitional housing, and critical services like job training, health care, counseling, and child care. Continuum of Care funding also supports services that specifically help homeless people with disabilities and their families.
