Rahall Announces $1.4 Million Awarded for Housing Assistance
WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 19, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) today announced southern West Virginia housing programs have been awarded nearly $1.4 million in grant funding for housing assistance to homeless individuals and families.
“Every family we are able to help with a home, strengthens our neighborhoods and business communities,” said Rahall. “This funding will help individuals find safe, secure housing and get on the path to self-sufficiency.”
Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance Funds are awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Continuum programs – Supportive Housing and Shelter Plus Care – provide funding for a range of assistance to homeless persons, including transitional housing, permanent housing, and a variety of supportive services.
The following community agencies and housing authorities in West Virginia’s Third District have been awarded funding:
• Cabell-Huntington Coalition for the Homeless — $342,657
• Housing Authority of Mingo County — $81,220
• Huntington West Virginia Housing Authority — $839,317
• Stop Abusive Family Environments — $135,799
The HUD Supportive Housing Program is designed to develop supportive housing and services that will allow homeless persons to live as independently as possible. Eligible applicants are states, units of local government, other governmental entities such as public housing authorities, and private nonprofits. HUD’s Shelter Plus Care Program provides rental assistance for homeless persons with disabilities, in connection with supportive services funded from sources outside the program.
