Manchin Applauds Groundbreaking for Homes for West Virginia in Greenbrier County

Washington, D.C. – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Homes for West Virginia today at “Hope Village” in White Sulphur Springs. At the groundbreaking, Mylan and MedExpress announced they will be providing $1 million and $500,000 respectively in seed money for Homes for West Virginia. This new program was launched by the nationally recognized disaster recovery nonprofit SBP and will partner with community leaders, West Virginia businesses and local stakeholders to rebuild communities, neighborhoods, small businesses and homes destroyed in the flooding.

“It’s a true testament to the spirit of West Virginia that homegrown companies are stepping up to help our state during this difficult time,” Senator Manchin said. “Through significant donations from Mylan and MedExpress, Homes for West Virginia will be able to help West Virginia residents, beginning in Greenbrier County, to rebuild what they have lost through the provision of affordable, permanent housing. I’d like to thank Jim Justice for laying the ground work and all of those who have left West Virginia but their love for our state has never left them. Our first responders, National Guard, and volunteers have been working tirelessly on the ground since the flood began and I thank them for their efforts and dedication to helping West Virginians in need.”

Homes for West Virginia’s first initiative is Homes for White Sulphur Springs, which will serve as a model for similar projects to be scaled for additional West Virginia communities impacted by the floods. Mennonite Disaster Services will help build the village, which will feature 42 homes and a community park.

SBP’s mission is to shrink time between disaster and recovery. Since its founding in 2006 in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, SBP has rebuilt homes for more than 1,120 families with the help of 125,000 volunteers in New Orleans; Joplin, MO; Staten Island, NY; Rockaway, NY; Monmouth and Ocean Counties, NJ; San Marcos, TX and Columbia, SC.
